BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF COMMITTEES

We welcome the active participation of attenders as well as members in the activities of most Monthly Meeting committees. If the activities of a committee interest you, please contact the committee's clerk or a member of Nominating Committee. Each committee member serves a three-year term which can be renewed for one second term.

Committees Open to Members and Attenders

First Day School Committee is responsible for the religious education of children and adolescents in the Meeting and provides nursery care for infants and toddlers. It plans the curriculum and activities for our children's and youth programs and arranges childcare for Meeting events and activities. Young children meet every Sunday during Meeting; teens meet on the first Sunday of the month. The children join Meeting for Worship for the first twenty minutes.

Hospitality Committee arranges for as many members and attenders as possible to help provide refreshments for social hours and Simple Meals after Meeting for Worship and occasional special events.

House Committee makes the Meetinghouse an attractive place to both current and potential Friends, handles the rental of the building to outside groups.

Memorial Committee helps loved ones upon the death of a Friend with the necessary arrangements for burial, a memorial service, and if so desired, a reception afterward.

Library Committee is responsible for maintaining and updating the meeting's library in the Vaux Room.

Outreach Committee seeks to nurture and expand the Meeting membership.

Peace & Service Committee strive to discern effective opportunities for the Meeting to express our faith in "that of God" in all people and in the world around us through actions and witness for peace & conflict resolution, justice and human rights for all, and an earth restored on local, regional, national, and international levels. It also sponsors discussions and forums on issues of concern.

Property Committee supervises the Meeting’s building and grounds, suggests and supervises needed repairs and upkeep.

Quaker Testimonies Endowment Fund is a restricted endowment fund whose income is to be spent to manifest the testimonies of Quakerism. We seek to send our membership into society as the Spirit may lead to do good there and to interpret the teachings and values of Quakerism to others.

Worship and Ministry Committee members consider the state of the Meeting's spiritual health and growth, and to plan for discussion and study groups which foster these aims.

Committees Open Only to Members

Advancement Committee works to meet our Meeting's financial needs by raising funds and promoting our Meeting.

Finance Committee supervisizes the Meeting's finances, helps to develop budgets, evaluates the Meeting's short- and long-term needs financial needs and develop policies which ensure its financial health.

Nominating Committee tries to give every member and active attenders an opportunity to become involved in the life of the Meeting through its leadership roles and committees. Conversely, it strives to ensure that the Meeting's committee and leadership structure meets the community's needs.

Care and Counsel is responsible for the pastoral care and well-being of the members and attenders, including weddings, illnesses and personal problems, and the welcoming of new members, as well as correspondence with friends at a distance.

School Committee members (at least five of whom must be members of Haverford Meeting, five more members of other meetings, and eight representing parents, faculty and staff) are nominated jointly by the School and the Meeting. They act as the board of directors for Friends School Haverford, overseeing its operation and development.

Tuition Aid Committee reviews applications for tuition aid from members of Meeting at the beginning of each year. It notifies the Finance Committee of applications that it approves. The Finance Committee determines the amount of aid and sends the money to the schools.
